The eyes have it
Jane Brown fala ao Telegraph sobre o seu último livro que recolhe fotografias de uma vida dedicada ao retrato de gente famosa que abrange desde artistas a políticos. Jane Brown trabalhou para o jornal The Observer durante 60 anos e desenvolveu uma técnica minimalista mas com resultados irrepreensíveis:
Most of her photographs were taken in sessions that lasted no more than 15 minutes. She had no props and turned up carrying only a shopping bag with her camera in it. Annie Leibovitz she wasn’t. Even exposure meters were shunned. “I just looked at the light on the back of my hand and judged it that way.” Thus Bown perfected minimalist photography: the same camera, the same lens, the same setting, but no flash or exposure meter. In this way she was left free to concentrate on those eyes.

Um retrato brutal da América suburbana e pobre, não sendo porém tão coeso como o trabalho de Zoe Strauss é no entanto um trabalho actual e bastante forte.
As a journalist and activist I have dedicated my life to exploring the how and why of class inequity in America. I am concerned with the internalized social messages that will live on for generations after our economic and social policies catch up with the reality of living on the bottom rung of America’s upwardly mobile society. My project explores the way that money is but a symptom of self-worth and a means by which humans separate from each other. Poverty is an emotional rather than physical state with layers of marginalization to cement those who live under them into their place. The economic crisis as it is called has done some to take the moral sting out of being poor, though the conversation remains centered on economic rather than social stimulus relief. Thus indicating that the crux of the crisis is for those that are recently without money rather than Americans whose ongoing struggles left them unfazed by the headlines.
